  • ACP documentation home states the job to be done: programmatic checkout

The Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation home describes a programmatic exchange between buyers, their agents, and sellers to complete a purchase, with agents rendering checkout UI and sellers keeping existing back-end models and payment processing.

  • ACP docs define merchant checkout-session REST endpoints

Official Agentic Commerce Protocol seller documentation specifies REST checkout session create/get/update/complete/cancel endpoints. Later versions require capability declarations in checkout responses. This is a different machine contract from x402’s 402 + header retry.

  • OpenAI opens Instant Checkout and publishes ACP as an open standard

OpenAI’s 29 September 2025 note describes Instant Checkout powered by ACP, built with Stripe, and open-sources the protocol so other agents and merchants can implement checkout sessions. This is in-chat retail, not an API micropayment 402.

  • Stripe and OpenAI release the Agentic Commerce Protocol with Instant Checkout

On 29 September 2025 Stripe announced that it powers Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and released the Agentic Commerce Protocol, co-developed with OpenAI. • Visa Intelligent Commerce opens the card network to AI agents

On 30 April 2025 Visa announced Intelligent Commerce at its Global Product Drop. The program exposes APIs so an authenticated agent can use a tokenized Visa credential under user-set controls. Named collaborators included Anthropic, OpenAI, Stripe and others. This is delegated card-rail commerce, not a stablecoin HTTP 402 protocol.

  • Coinbase AgentKit adds launch-day support for OpenAI’s Agents SDK

On 11 March 2025 Coinbase Developer Platform said AgentKit would support OpenAI’s Agents SDK on launch day, so developers could attach commercial/wallet capabilities to that orchestration kit. This is vendor documentation of an integration, not proof of independent paid volume.

  • OpenAI ships the Agents SDK, Responses API and computer-use tools

On 11 March 2025 OpenAI published tools for building agents: a Responses API, built-in web/file/computer-use tools, and an open-source Agents SDK for single- and multi-agent workflows. Payment is not specified by the SDK; wallet and 402 clients remain an overlay.

  • OpenAI introduces Operator, a computer-use agent

On 23 January 2025 OpenAI introduced Operator, an agent that can use a web browser to perform tasks. Computer-use agents can complete human checkout flows; they do not by themselves create a machine-native payment rail.
