  Linux Foundation announces operational launch of the x402 Foundation

  On 14 July 2026 the Linux Foundation announced the operational launch of the x402 Foundation and completed contribution of the protocol by Coinbase. Premier members listed include Adyen, AWS, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe, Visa and others. Membership is not settlement volume.

  On 2 April 2026, at MCP Dev Summit North America, the Linux Foundation announced it is launching the x402 Foundation with contribution of the x402 protocol from Coinbase. Named intending supporters included Cloudflare, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Circle, Google and others. This is a governance announcement, not a traffic print.

  Agent commerce protocols proliferate beyond crypto-native stacks

  Through 2025–2026, incumbent payments and model vendors published overlapping agent-commerce interfaces. Stripe describes an Agentic Commerce Protocol alongside MPP and x402 support. Visa shipped Intelligent Commerce. The overlapping vocabulary is a classification problem for buyers and a coverage obligation for zFinia.

  Stripe documents MPP as an internet-native way for agents to pay

  Stripe published MPP as an open standard co-authored with Tempo. Agents request an API, MCP server or HTTP resource; the service returns a payment request; the agent authorizes; Stripe businesses see the payment like any other PaymentIntent. Stripe also states payment support for both MPP and x402 inside a broader agentic commerce stack.

  Tempo mainnet ships with Stripe-coauthored Machine Payments Protocol

  On 18 March 2026 Tempo announced public mainnet RPC and introduced MPP, co-authored with Stripe. MPP lets an agent request a resource, receive a 402 challenge, authorize payment, and receive the resource. Tempo says Visa, Stripe and Lightspark have extended MPP across cards, platform methods and Lightning. Stripe’s own blog presents MPP as an open standard for agent payments, including settlement into existing Stripe balances.

  ACP documentation home states the job to be done: programmatic checkout

  The Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation home describes a programmatic exchange between buyers, their agents, and sellers to complete a purchase, with agents rendering checkout UI and sellers keeping existing back-end models and payment processing.

  ACP docs define merchant checkout-session REST endpoints

  Official Agentic Commerce Protocol seller documentation specifies REST checkout session create/get/update/complete/cancel endpoints. Later versions require capability declarations in checkout responses. This is a different machine contract from x402’s 402 + header retry.

  OpenAI opens Instant Checkout and publishes ACP as an open standard

  OpenAI’s 29 September 2025 note describes Instant Checkout powered by ACP, built with Stripe, and open-sources the protocol so other agents and merchants can implement checkout sessions. This is in-chat retail, not an API micropayment 402.
